What I need Brake Pads for a 1979 Schwinn LeTour III?
I am updating a couple of Schwinn bicycles LeTour we bought in 1979. I got that Kool Stop brake pads are good, but how I can find out what type of purchase? The original pills say "COMPE" on the side, and have a corrugated aluminum channel on the V-shaped brake shoe rubber. I suspect the pin pad is replaced as a unit. The platform itself is approximately 1.5 centimeters long. 0.5 inches wide and 0.6 inches from the shoe to the rim. The surface that touches the rim has slots such that there are three areas that contact the rim. The following is a description of a set of brake pads that looks like it could work: Campy Brake Kool Stop dual compound insert-mixed condition (dual compound) replacement pads for Campagnolo Chorus, Athena, and brake pads record holders. I would get these bikes in a position paved bicycle trails, and the brakes and tires seem like a nice place to start. Thanks for any direction!
Yes …. new pads are a good idea if yours is several years (or decades!) of age. : O) You can put almost any type of pad you want there. KoolStop make good, but nothing will work. Some brake pads today have a metal that can replace just the rubber pad …. others are still made just like the old pad is folded permanently in the media. When you go to the store, which should have kits with the owner and pads if you want the cartridge "style" that is replaceable …. that probably have the replacement pads for them too. They are determined to have the normal style cushions, too (Weinmann, DiaCompe, Shimano, Jagwire, etc). One thing you need to know is if you brake threaded or post style (it sounds as if the thread). Bring to the store with you to make sure you get the right kind of brakes. As regards KoolStop pads, regular black compound is quite good. Salmon (red) pads stop better in most conditions, and the grays are very good. The brakes on his old bike are not as powerful as more modern designs, and even a super-well pad not notice much difference …. keep that in mind before you spend $ 30 on a game pad blingy. : O)
