Cycling Heart Rate Zones

A problem when cycling cadence?

My main sport is running distance, and took the bike for cross training. I cycle a lot when I was younger. I'm more comfortable when the pedal in the range of 60 to 75 RPM, but I've been told I should be in the range 80-90. When I go over 75, my pace heart starts to rise, and in the hills, if it falls below 55, you do the same. Do I live within my "comfort zone", or should try to increase my cycling speed? I competed in a couple of triathlons, and I would try to time trials. At the time, I am an unfit after a break of 12 months followed of knee surgery, and I'm just building back. i average 14 MPH in 15 to 20 miles, but that's on my bike winter tires quite large. I used an average of about 17 to 19 MPH in a similar distance on my other bike when I was fitter.

You do not indicate if you are using the same gear, or a bottom, and if you are riding at the same speed, with rapid pedal stroke. However, even riding the same speed a higher cadence will increase your Heart Rate a bit. This is normal, you are using your cardiovascular system rather than brute force to move along. If is recovering from knee surgery, it is important not to push the pedals, but to turn to learn to reduce stress on the joint. As your state fitness improves, you will be able to spin the gears higher and higher in the same cadence, increasing its speed. At first, you may find it more difficult to spin faster, but the knees will thank you to reduce the pressure on them.
